A second-year PhD Accounting Education candidate at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Mr. Gideon Quansah, has embarked on a humanitarian mission to support inmates of the Ankaful Main Camp Prison.

The benevolent exercise forms part of the celebration of his birthday anniversary and falls under his foundation dubbed 'Gideon’s Charity Foundation'.

Items donated to the institution included toiletries, detergents, packs of water, Kivo Products, toothbrushes, and toothpaste among other assorted drinks.

At a short ceremony to hand over the items, Mr. Quansah said the donation was aimed at providing some of the basic needs of the male inmates to ensure their well-being during their incarceration.

He expressed joy at supporting the Prisons Service, which he said, had a very important mandate of taking care and reforming prisoners.

Mr. Quansah said as a postgraduate student, he was obliged to contribute to community service apart from conducting extensive research.

“I am committed to giving back to society and extending support to institutions such as the Prisons Service, as part of my community service as a postgraduate student of the UCC.,” he continued.

He expressed his readiness to support the prison with a stitching machine to be used at the prison’s garment centre, to enable the inmates to learn a trade and be self-sufficient after serving their prison sentences.

Commendation

The Officer-in-Charge of the Ankaful Main Camp, Dr. Aaron Agbenyegah, received the items and commended the postgraduate student for his kind gesture, adding that it would go a long way to support the male inmates.

He explained that the goal of the prison was not to punish but to cause amendment by rehabilitating the inmates back into society.

As a result, he called on corporate Ghana and the public to support the prison’s skills training programme to reform the inmates and make them employable upon their release.

“Without the collective help of the public, the mandate of reformation, rehabilitation and reintegration of such persons into the society cannot be achieved,” he said.

He assured the donor that the items provided would be used by the prison inmates.
