The Executive Secretary of the Water Resources Commission, Prof Alidu Seidu, has been elected to represent the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the by-election slated for September 30 in the Tamale Central Constituency.

He beat his 11 contenders by securing 840 out of a total of 1,511 votes.

The by-election has been necessitated by the demise of the incumbent MP, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, on August 6 in a helicopter crash with 7 others. Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party has declined to contest in the election as a show of respect for the memory of the late MP. 

The primary was held at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale. Some 400 security personnel have been deployed to the voting center. Both the National and Regional executives say they are impressed with the process. 

According to the election directorate, voting is expected to close at 2 pm despite the late start of voting. Deputy National Communication Director of the party, Ako Gunn, describes the process as free and fair. “So far so very good, and we hope this election ends peacefully,” he said. “At the end of the day, we expect all the other 11 aspirants to rally behind the winner,” he said.
