Abraham Norman Nortey, a prominent student leader who previously served as the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) President for both the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), has officially entered frontline politics.
Nortey has announced his intention to contest the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries for the Domeabra-Obom Constituency ahead of the 2028 general elections.
“Abraham Norman Nortey – Aspiring Parliamentary Candidate for Domeabra Obom Constituency. #NyameBÉ›yÉ› #StrongerTogether #BuildingTheFuture.”
With this announcement, he formally joins the growing roster of aspirants vying for the NDC ticket in Domeabra-Obom as the party strategizes for the 2028 polls.
Nortey is no stranger to leadership and grassroots mobilization. He first rose to national prominence in student governance when he served as the UHAS SRC President in 2019.
He cemented his reputation in November 2024 after winning the UCC SRC presidency. Sworn in on December 17, 2024, as the 62nd President for the 2024/2025 academic year, his tenure was historic:
He became the first medical student to lead the UCC student body.
He is one of the few student leaders in Ghana’s history to serve as SRC President at two different public universities.
Beyond the lecture halls, Nortey has built a strong community presence through his non-profit organization, the Visionary Norman Foundation. The foundation spearheads various community development initiatives, including:
Free medical screening exercises and vaccination campaigns.
Reproductive health education and community sanitation programs.
Providing scholarships and tuition support for tertiary students. Notably, in 2026, the foundation funded 20 students across public institutions like the University of Ghana and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
Politically, Nortey laid the groundwork for his parliamentary bid during the 2024 general elections. He played an active role in the NDC’s campaign mobilization, effectively engaging diverse voting blocs in the constituency, including market women, commercial transport operators, youth groups, and grassroots supporters.
To back his political and social endeavors, Mr. Nortey boasts an extensive and multidisciplinary academic portfolio. His qualifications include:
Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (UHAS).
Master of Public Health (MPH) from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).
Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Accounting from the University of Education, Winneba.
Master of Education (MEd) in Teaching in Higher Education (UCC).
He continues to advance his education and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) at UCC, a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) at King’s University College, and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Public Health at Universidad Central de Nicaragua.
